Delivering those meals to the community requires a village
MYRTLE BEACH, SC – (December 2008) – Cooking elaborate meals for thousands of people is a daily occurrence at Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort at Kingston Shores. Getting those meals from the kitchen to the homes of 550 families takes a much larger community effort. More than 550 complete turkey dinners with all the fixings are going out to people in need this Christmas Eve thanks to Abe Safa, project organizer, and his band of volunteers.
Abe Safa and his crew have turned to Executive Chef Peter Gennaro at the Hilton to fire up the ovens to prepare the turkey dinners. “We prepare for weeks to make these special holiday meals,” says Gennaro. The folks in the Hilton kitchens will roast 550 turkeys that are accompanied by three side dishes, cranberry and homemade pie.
“Last year we delivered meals to five hundred people,” says Safa. “We are adding 50 more families to the list since there are so many people in need of a little something special this holiday.”
The volunteers work with area school guidance counselors, Boys & Girls Clubs and other community organizations to identify the families to receive the meals. Safa and friends, Richard Lewis, Jason Green, Jeremy Finger and Greg Harrelson and a host of other local community members raise the money to purchase the for the food with Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort kicking in the labor and culinary expertise.
The meals will be delivered on December 24 starting at 11 a.m. The group has recruited more than 60 drivers to pick up the meals and make the deliveries. To donate or volunteer, please call 843-424-2122.
